If you went to school in Nevada, no. You are probably thinking of my sister. We look alike and our names sound similar. People ask me this all the time.
How many people helped you with this?
None. It's been just me for this whole thing. I have seven notebooks worth of stuff I didn't even mention here. If the legislation gets picked up, the program will probably last longer than I will.
(I take that back. I am asking one person to check the page over before I publish, just for any glaring errors or omissions. )

Seriously, though...I just talked to people. Literally, anyone who would listen, we would have a discussion. I've had conversations getting my blood drawn, in the checkout line at the supermarket, pumping gas...and I didn't even know if the people I was talking to were even in my district. Regardless, I encouraged them to vote. You should too. At the very least, you get a cool sticker.
EDIT: I also posted to social media a couple of times, and asked people to share.

During his final legislative session in 2023, he sponsored Senate Bill 342, which secured $8 million in state WICHE funding for tuition stipends covering 70 Nevada students attending Utah State University's veterinary school, a program aimed at easing rural veterinary shortages
I obviously applaud addressing shortfalls in your community. Getting $8 million dollars to reimburse 70 students is no small feat.
I also understand that with the NSHE's previous guidelines, the only way to educate those veterinary students was through providing tuition reimbursement via an out of state school. (Starting a veterinary program within the current system would take years to establish.)
This would have been a good opportunity to profile my FLUX proposal, since it will try and remedy the timeliness problem. (Reporting on it would also go toward giving each candidate equal coverage.)
FLUX would:
- generate passive income/funding for colleges (with no expenditure) - helping to prevent tuition increases and provide COLA funding for staff
- provide high school and returning students tutoring and free CLEP testing, earning free credits for college
- offer students for-credit classes through the NSHE system where they pay tuition rates only (with no per credit fees attached)
- provide assistance with planning degree tracks in the NSHE system
- help students accelerate their graduation date, leaving them with less debt overall
-create new degree and certification programs
-provide work training courses
- allow students new certifications and degrees
-provide upskilling for Nevada companies
- built in pivoting allows for instruction for whatever emergent need the state has, with handoff to the colleges for successful programs, allowing room for new classes
- and more…for around the same cost as the veterinary program.

I would like to point out, in my opinion, your article reads very similarly to hers, and was published on the same day.
Obviously, it's not word for word, and it might be a coincidence. However, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that The Nevada Independent's articles can be republished for free under the Creative Commons license, providing you give them attribution and a link to their website.
They are a non-profit news agency that employs actual reporters. You could re-publish their articles for free, saving not just the processing power, but the costs and tertiary impacts from using AI in your articles. Also, you'd have fact checking provided by real people who are paid for their work.
Paired with your seo optimization, this should drive tons of traffic to your site.

How do you feel about DEI?
My understanding is that this debate sprang from removing the IDEA council from the NSHE code to "tidy it up". Assurances were made that it was just to reduce the page count, etc., and no other changes were forthcoming.
Then they started to discuss dissolving the IDEA committee. Technically, the committee is part of the council, but it's not the entire committee they were discussing. (Semantics, obviously.)
Then, there came the argument that dissolution would be more efficient. They said it would improve efficiency and avoid fragmentation by allowing each school to manage it on their own. I think NSU is a great example of why this would not work.
So, how would I vote on this? No. Absolutely not.
While I will not point fingers at any board member specifically, previous comments made while on the record during their political careers, lead me to believe they may not have the student's best interest in this area. (This is obviously my own opinion and not proven fact.)
Here are my thoughts:
First, they did not follow the spirit of their justification in removing DEI from their code. It was obviously step two in this long term plan. (Previously, they discontinued some reporting tied to these issues.)
Second, (and I say this as an old white lady), the board currently lacks the diversity to adequately reflect a cross section of the student body to ensure equitable consideration in decision making.
Third, their argument that the committee was defunct since it had not met in a year, in my opinion, should more be a signal that the system is working, not that it isn't needed. (Assembly members can only introduce new legislation every other year, but that doesn't mean they do nothing in the meantime.)
Fourth, again, I point to NSU. How would they navigate this?
None of these changes seem to be made in good faith. If anything, it seems like a steady erasure of a checks and balances system.
The council does not have a dedicated budget, so there's no financial incentive for it's removal.
The public backlash should have shown the board public sentiment was strongly against this issue, so I don't understand why the vote is delayed and not dropped entirely.
Scholarships for the previously incarcerated
This was from a question posed during the GPSA town hall, discussing the limited number of scholarships available for the previously incarcerated. As I said then, I still believe approaching business who go out of their way for employment would be a good group to approach about proposing new scholarships. There's also anti-recidivism programs that could be approached about funding as well as public safety and community grants.
I did some research today and found a couple of other sources in the meantime. You might want to look at the PEF as well as Empowering a Better Tomorrow scholarship. The end violence program has a smaller one and there's also TTEF.
